Most actors like to be in front of the camera, except perhaps when it comes to a shoot for the all important publicity portrait or 'headshot'. This will go into casting directories and theatre programmes and has to strike a balance between flattery and honesty while also conveying the essence of the performer. In these contact sheets we can see TP being put through the motions. The first is probably taken on the stage of the Queens Theatre about 1960 while the second is in the photographer's studio. The third however is at the other end of the decade and is an outdoor shoot. By that time, the formality and perfection of the studio portrait has give way to a more naturalistic approach.
